Please notify Amtrak Vacations if you will be traveling with a Service Animal at the time of making your reservation. Service animals are animals that are trained to perform a specific task for the benefit of a person with a disability. Amtrak® personnel may ask what task(s) the service animal performs. You must keep your service animal under control at all times. Service animals may not sit on seats, on beds, or in the aisles, they must remain at the feet of the passenger.
Where the train schedule permits, you may walk your service animal at station stops. Please note that you must stay within reasonable proximity to the train and be prepared to promptly re-board when notified that the train is about to depart. We recommend that you speak with the conductor when you first board the train to learn which stops will be long enough to walk your service animal.
Amtrak® trains accommodate most wheeled mobility devices in use today. Wheeled mobility devices should not exceed 27.5 inches (70 cm) wide and 48 inches (122 cm) long when occupied, and they should have a minimum of 2 inches (5 cm) of ground clearance. The weight limit for an occupied wheeled mobility device is 600 lbs (273 kg). Amtrak® permits both manually operated and battery-powered wheeled mobility devices that meet these specifications.
In addition to self-service handcarts in a number of Amtrak stations, you can count on uniformed Red Caps to provide free baggage-handling assistance at many major stations. We recommend that you accept assistance from only uniformed Red Cap agents. All baggage handled by Red Cap is protected by a claim check.
Free Red Cap assistance service is offered at these major stations:
